Child Safety Fence TipsOne of the most enjoyable recreational activities for children of all ages is swimming. Unfortunately swimming and swimming pools account for many drowning and near drowning incidents across the world. A child can drown in less than 5 minutes. By many standards that is as long as it takes you to walk inside, answer the phone, jot down a message and return to the pool. In the states of California, Florida & Arizona as well as in Australia drowning is the number one cause of death in children under 4. That is an astounding statistic. Every person who owns a swimming pool should supply the pool area with a four sided fence.

Wondering if You Have to Install a Fence Around Your Pool?Fencing does not only protect you and your family it also deters unwanted visitors from swimming in your pool unattended. Most cities and towns do have regulations in regard to the proper safety fencing that is required around a pool. If you choose to leave your pool unsecure you could be faced with steep fines and penalties. Which Type of Pool Fence is Best? There are lots of fencing materials to choose from. For the do it yourselfer there are plenty of options that come in kits so you can install it easily yourself. If you would rather someone else do it, hire a professional installer. In this area you should put safety above cost and choose the most secure fencing available that suits your needs. There are things to look for in fencing and some tips that may help you make this important decision. What to Look for When Installing a Pool Fence?Obviously a pool fence should surround the pool area on all 4 sides. The best option is to have it completely separate from the rest of the house so that it sits isolated in the yard. Require the fence to be at least 4 feet tall on all sides. This will at least keep curious toddlers from scaling the fence easily. As you choose what kind of material you want to build with, opt for one that does not lend to easy climbing. If you will be using a wooden fence, make sure that there are no horizontal slats or decorative pieces that could be used a foot holds. Chain link is not a good choice as it is easily climbed. For the same reason, don’t install a fence close to trees or other rocks or hills that can make the fence easy to scale. If I were choosing the best fence it would be either mesh or polyester. If the mesh is bordered it makes for a completely secure area. The polyester is extra durable and can withstand the most wear. Why You Shouldn’t Use Fancy or Decorative Fences around Your PoolA fence can be useful and pretty. If you want a decorative type fence, don’t install one that has holes or circular cut outs that are larger than 4 inches in diameter. When you install the fence no matter what kind you use; level it flat to the ground or decking. This will not only prevent small children from sliding under but can keep unwanted animal visitors out as well. How to Find the Right Gates for Your Pool AreaObviously you will need a point of entry. Gates can be ornamental, durable and provide even extra security. Self locking or self latching gates are your best bet by far. This way even younger kids who enter or exit will have the gate fall closed behind them. Install the locks as high as possible, at least 4 feet up off the ground. Make sure that the gates are supported properly with no more than 30 inches between posts. This will prevent sagging and save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Another incredible tool you will probably want to think about is having a pool alarm installed. This can tell you if the gate has been opened. There are also alarms that will let you know as soon as the water has been breeched. Once you choose your fence and install it, check it over carefully. Try to breech the fence from a child’s point of view and see if there are any weak spots.
